I know, I know, it's been awhile. I'm struggling for a witty turn of phrase to say "I quit my job and am now semi-unemployed, that's why I haven't posted!" but that will have to do. In fact, it's hilarious! ha ha!
Bear with me, I'll get funnier once I ease into this again. Until then, here's a knock-your-socks-off piece about Katrina and class in the Nation by Adolph Reed Jr., a real lefty for the ages. This is not your ordinary "Katrina is about race!" article.
Here are my top 3 fave points:
1. Katrina was not just about race. It was also about poverty and disengagement. Saying it's just about race is not only sloppy, it obscures other huge problems. We're pushing class back into the
closet with our Mao Zedong.
2. The poor's disengagement from government and democratic institutions is a bi-partisan problem.
3. Who's really invested in improving government services for the poor? The people who receive the services, duh. You can put a whole lot of minority leaders in positions of power, but race won't solve the problem of dysfunctional government if it's really class that we're talking about.
That's it for now. I'm back live!
